“What the hell were you thinking?!” Philippa cried. Michael clasped her shaking hands behind her back until her knuckles turned white. She chewed at the inside of her lower lip until a metallic tang filled her mouth. The captain leant back in her wheelchair, eyes firmly shut.
“I was only doing what I thought was best, Philippa. I-I only wanted to keep you safe…” Michael whispered. “I should have listened. I’m so sorry…” She glared at shoes to hide the tears welling in her eyes. Philippa’s expression softened into worry. She shifted forwards, craning her neck as far as she could. Michael bit down against her lip, hard, in an attempt to halt her crying. Philippa gently brushed her fingers against Michael’s lips. They came away smeared with red.
“Oh, Michael, forgive this silly old woman! Let me see,” she ordered. Michael reluctantly sat down in Philippa’s cushioned chair. “I’m sorry, Michael.” She wiped her bloody fingers unceremoniously on her sleeve. “You know how hard it is to get rid of me. One little stab isn’t going to finish me off,” she chuckled.
“But it could have! They had to replace your heart and lungs, repair your spinal cord, and replace your arm! Philippa, I–” Her voice crackled and lowered to a husky whisper. “I can’t lose you.” She buried her face in the synthetic leather padding of the chair, leaving scarlet streaks across the stark white surface. Philippa reached for Michael’s chin, left hand gleaming silver in the dim lighting.
“Michael, you know I’m not going anywhere,” she soothed, pulling Michael’s face away from the chair’s back. “Not even when I’m out of this damn chair.” She stroked Michael’s hair with her free hand, toying with the tightly-wound coils. Philippa slipped her hand off Michael’s chin, sliding her other thumb down to her jawline. She dug around in her uniform pocket, metal wrist clinking against the zipper. “Not even then,” she repeated, attempting to clear Michael’s eyes. A handkerchief emerged from her pocket, neatly folded. She wiped the tears off Michael’s cheeks before methodically cleaning the blood from her lips.
“Philippa, I’m sorry,” she mumbled, obstructed by the cloth. Her hand covered the cool surface of Philippa’s. She wove her fingers through the metallic ones that lay limp on her shoulder.
“Oh, Michael, it’ll be okay. I promise. Do you mind…” she jerked her head in the direction of the sofa. “I don’t think that chair is big enough for me and you. At least, not comfortably,” she added.
“I think you’re right.” Michael pulled herself out of her seat. She stretched and yawned.
“Of course I’m right, I’m the captain.” Michael casually leant down and scooped Philippa up. A small voice in the pits of her consciousness chided her for crossing acceptable boundaries of a captain and first officer. She ignored it. Philippa laughed. “My knight in shining armour, I suppose?” She rested her head against Michael’s collarbone. “Hm. I could get used to this.” Pink crept across Michael’s cheeks as she carefully placed Philippa on the sofa.
“So could I,” mumbled Michael, face now bright red. She settled a wool blanket over Philippa. “Goodnight, Philippa.”
“Oh, don’t go!” Michael turned, a smile on her face. She picked Philippa up again, receiving the same adorable laugh, and carried her to her bed. She wrapped her in the layers of assorted blankets. Pulling off her boots, Michael curled up next to Philippa.
“Love you, Pippa.”
“I like you too, baby girl.” Michael wound her arms around Philippa’s waist. She nuzzled Philippa’s neck. “That feels good, Michael.” She pressed a kiss to Michael’s halo of curls.
The heavy blankets and comfort of each other saw them fall into a peaceful sleep for the first time in a very, very long while.
